What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a practice that brings together several manual techniques performed mainly on the musculature. It is based on a holistic concept of the person and aims to promote their health. Massage therapy aims to treat and prevent injuries, pain and other problems that may arise in the individual.

Depending on the reason for the consultation, the massage therapist will use different massage techniques. Massage therapy can be practiced both as a therapeutic care and as a relaxation care.

Massage therapy provides many health benefits.

It promotes, among other things:

  • muscular and nervous relaxation,
  • blood and lymphatic circulation as well as the elimination of toxins,
  • relief of muscle pain.

Massage therapy is for everyone who desires its benefits. The massage therapist will adapt their maneuvers according to the needs and health conditions of the client.*

*Note that there are certain contraindications to general massage.

What should I expect of my first appointment?

One thing to expect of your first appointment, no matter where you go, is to fill out a customer form before the massage. This form is required by your therapist to assess your health and needs. From there, the therapist can have a better understanding of your needs and determine what technique is better suited to you. In the off chance where the therapist is not in the capacity of meeting your needs, they will refer you to another health professional.

Once we have completed the form together, we will find a goal for the day and you’ll be able to voice your concerns, if you have any. I will explain to you what the massage consists of and confirm your consent. The Swedish massage will be performed on a table, and I will use an oil on your skin to perform my techniques. Once we are ready to begin, I will leave the room to give you privacy to remove your clothing and place yourself on the table under the blankets. I will only uncover the area that is being massaged, one at the time. At any moment, during the massage, you’ll be able to ask any questions and I will adapt to your needs. At the end of the appointment, there will be a short check-in to see how you feel, and the payment will be done then.

How can I determine which technique is better for me?

The best way to determine which technique is best for you is to ask yourself: What do I want from my massage? Because massage therapy can be practiced with different approaches, it is essential to know your goal as well as your expectations. This is what will help you choose which approach will be most beneficial to you.

How to dress for a massage?

Ideally for a Swedish massage performed with oil on your skin, you only keep your underwear on so that the therapist has access to your muscles without restricting movement.

However, you can remove only the clothing of your choice in order to feel comfortable or choose to massage only a specific area, such as your back and arms, but not your legs.

Keep in mind that once we are ready to begin, I will leave the room to give you privacy to remove your clothes and place yourself on the table under the covers. During your massage, only one area at a time will be uncovered and this will be the massaged area.

There are other massage techniques that are also practiced over clothing, but unfortunately, I do not offer those techniques at this time.

How to choose a massage therapist?

In Quebec, massage therapy is not yet governed by a professional code, which means that its practice is not regulated. However, there are trainings and certifications by institutions recognized by massage therapy associations. The associations all have a code of ethics and therapists must follow a work ethic that respects it. Ideally, your massage therapist should be a professional who has a combination of technical knowledge acquired through training and certification as well as different interpersonal skills, such as empathy, communication skills, adaptability and professionalism.

What are the massage contraindications?

The massage contraindications are fever, contagious skin diseases, specific infectious diseases, serious metabolic diseases, uncontrolled high blood pressure, atherosclerosis et haemophilia.

Depending on the massage techniques used, there may be other specific contraindications.

Is a massage painful?

A massage should not be a painful experience because a good massage therapist will check in with you during your massage to make sure the pressure is okay and will be able to adapt their pressure to your needs and preferences.

It’s important to know that a good massage doesn’t have to cause you pain to be effective. You might feel some discomfort when working on an area that has a pre-existing pain or is very tense, in that case, let your therapist know so that they can adjust if needed.

However, it is not unusual to feel some soreness 24h to 48h after a massage. This is because your body responds to a massage as if you had done physical exercise!  It is also possible to find light bruises after specific techniques, but that is something the therapist should let you know before performing them.

Am I expected to tip my massage therapist?

No, you are not. The decision is entirely up to you.

Can I get a receipt for insurance purposes?
